Plant Sale Results & Next Steps
The Inaugural Near Northwest Community Plant Sale hosted by the Near Northwest Community Improvement Corporation was a success. We sold more than a 1,000 plants to raise nearly $3,500 for the White Oak Butterfly & Hummingbird Garden. Thanks go to Heidi Sheesley of Treesearch Farms for providing the plants and enthusiasm to make this happen.
But she's not done! Now that we have raised a little money, Heidi is forging ahead with getting plants in the ground. Heidi is calling in favors and has gotten design firm Glauser McNair to donate the design for the garden, Tomorrow's Design to install pavers at cost and Cowboy Trucking to donate the sand for the path.
Now we need community volunteers to help out. May 5 volunteers are needed to spread compost to prepare the ground for planting. Please bring shovels and heavy duty rakes. May 12 volunteers are needed to plant so bring shovels and hand trowels. For more information call Jan Whittington at 713-895-8021.
In the News
Last week KHOU reported that HPD busted 13 suspected prostitutes on the Antoine Corridor. This took place at Antoine and 290, well outside District boundaries, however KHOU reporter Jeff McShan used it as an opportunity to talk about the increasing safety of our area. The story is very positive about District efforts to improve the area so be sure you watch the video.
Earth Day
Our first Earth Day event was very successful! As it turns out, there's just not that much litter on Antoine anymore or at least area businesses are being more vigilant about picking it up. Thanks to all the businesses and residents who came out the clean-up day on Earth Day and everyday! See photos on our WebSite and Facebook Page.
Job Fair
Please spread the word about the District's next Near Northwest Community Job Fair, May 9 at Advent Lutheran Church, 5820 Pinemont from 10 am to 1 pm. Go to our Jobs Page for more information or download our Event Flyer. |
